The peak of the outbreak is estimated to be late May / early June. Even after things abate, clubs and league bodies are going to wish to err on the side of caution before resuming matches. So, like Yorkheed, I struggle to see how the season can be concluded - which raises all sorts of issues about promotion and relegation, players contracts etc. Promotion to the Premier League is estimated to be worth £100m so Leeds and WBA will not be happy bunnies if it does not go ahead.
Equally, just announcing that promotion and relegation places will be determined based on current league standings will not be welcomed by those clubs who have games in hand or are in good current form. There was a TV report the other night about Tranmere who are fighting against relegation but have won their last three so were on a bit of a roll.
Maybe there needs to be an equivalent of a Pools Panel to forecast the results of outstanding fixtures. But would all clubs accept their rulings with so much money at stake?
For many clubs lower down the scale (including Gateshead) the issue is likely to be one of survival. I would hope that the FA (with help from government) could put some form of support package in place, given the importance of our national game to the fabric of society. Of course, there will be plenty of other organisations also crying out for support if 'lockdown' measures go into place - small retailers, pubs, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, rail companies as well as airlines and local airports affected by the travel bans. We are heading into uncharted waters.
I don't understand why they can't just temporarily suspend hte league then pick up where it left off when they're back and over the next couple of seasons catch up with reduced summer breaks and cancelled international tournaments. Start the remainder of the season whenever. Then start the season 6 weeks after. Then back to normal the season after that. Might need FIFA to cancel World Cup 2022 to make that happen.
Wonder if player contracts will all.be extended relative to how many months this is postponed for? I imagine its going to get alot worse its not forecast to peak till may june so very much expect it to get postponed once again. Personally think the season will end up being scrapped.
